PUCK SKILLS
The Puck Skills Program is designed to enhance every aspect of puck handling and movement, tailored to the player’s current skill level – from foundational basics to elite techniques. Through progressive drills, players will develop greater hand dexterity by learning to control the puck in new positions, using different parts of the blade, and increasing their speed. This training also builds stamina in the muscles required for precise hand skills. As players advance, they’ll be introduced to situational moves, 1 on 1 plays off the rush, battling out of the corner, and creating shot lanes. By the end of the program, players will experience a significant improvement in their puck control, with a stronger connection between their hands, stick, and puck. Full hockey equipment is required.

SKATING THAT TRANSLATES
Ben Payne’s Skating That Translates (SKTT) program focuses on game-specific power skating and edge work, providing players with both the technical skills and the tactical understanding needed for success. At SKTT, players learn not just “how” to skate effectively but also the importance of the “why.” By replicating recurring movement patterns in game-like environments, players develop essential skills like attacking and defending the rush, creating space, and improving agility and mobility in small areas. This comprehensive approach builds on a strong skating foundation, ensuring players can handle the puck, pass, and shoot with greater efficiency and effectiveness.
Learning Outcomes:
Skating Fundamentals
- Mastering upper body control and posture during edge work
- Inside, outside, and flat edges
- Glide turns and tight turns
- Forward/backward crossovers and crossunders
- Pivots process: transitions between forwards and backwards
Puck Skill Fundamentals
- Puck control, placement, and passing
Offensive & Defensive Tactics
- Developing smart skating attack angles
- Forwards-to-backwards and backwards-to-forwards transitions
Note: this program is tailored to each players development. Some themes may not be covered, depending on individual comprehension. Full hockey equipment is required.

Body Contact
Body contact is an essential skill in hockey and a key part of the game today. For players transitioning from non-contact hockey, this program will teach how to use the body effectively – not only to protect themselves and separate opponents from the puck but also to maintain puck possession and create opportunities to make plays. Key focuses include keeping your head up, learning to accept contact, leaning on opponents, and spinning off pressure. This program will equip players with the techniques needed to stay safe and use body contact to their advantage.

Open Hockey
Open Hockey is one of the greatest features of being a member at NSWC. In Vancouver, we aren’t given the opportunity to play pickup pond hockey very often or have empty arenas where kids can just step on the ice in the old barn when the rink guy gives us a spare key but at NSWC we have the next best thing, Open Hockey.
Open Hockey is our member’s opportunity to play, practice and enjoy hockey in a non-structured capacity. We have the skills ice, fondly referred to as ‘The Tube’, which is almost always open, or a random sheet of ice that happens to be free, Open Hockey allows members the chance to skate, shoot and play without coaches or teams organizing the session. Whether a player just wants a few more reps for 5 minutes after practice, or wants to shoot pucks for an hour instead of watching their siblings ice times, Open Hockey gives them an opportunity that doesn’t exist in a traditional Minor Hockey organization.
Every participant, regardless of age, must wear a helmet and any player under 18 must be in full hockey gear.

Divisions
Division 1
Men’s Division 1 is a fast, competitive league with a lot of young players. They enjoy the quick competition with a friendly rivalry between teams. There is a draft for new teams each year to mix up the players and create a more social atmosphere.
Division 2
Men’s Division 2 is the same format as Division 1 where it offers friendly rivalries, good competition, and a draft each year; however, the pace is slightly slower. This is the division that is best suited for those who don’t want to be playing with skaters coming out of Minor Hockey! Division 2 also welcomes all new players to come out and play. The league averages six games a month, typically every Sunday and on two Wednesdays.
Annual All Star Game
Every Super Bowl weekend, the NSWC organizes multiple All Star games on the Friday to showcase the numerous talented members who play in our league. This fun night includes a buffet, drink specials, exciting hockey games to watch, and an overall good time!
Elite Hockey Program
Program Overview
FOR ASPIRING YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS & THEIR PARENTS
Welcome to the North Shore Winter Club (NSWC) Elite Hockey Development Program. Designed to foster the next generation of elite hockey players, our comprehensive 3-year program is tailored to help 13-15 year-old athletes reach their fullest potential, both on and off the ice, while also providing valuable exposure and increased opportunity. With a strong foundation built on skill development, team dynamics, game systems, and high-level competition, our program ensures that each player is wellprepared to further their career at the Junior, Major Junior, or NCAA level.
Year 1 Development Focus
YEAR 1 U14 - BUILDING THE FOUNDATION
In the first year, we emphasize both individual and collective growth. Our team of solely first-year players is encouraged to quickly adapt to a faster pace of play. Our experienced coaching staff works closely with each player, fostering a strong foundation built on humble confidence, enhanced individual skills, advance hockey intelligence, and a profound understanding of team camaraderie. We highlight the importance of teamwork and competitiveness, ensuring that our players are prepared to excel in the U15 season.
See Resources Tab for more detailed breakdown.
Year 2 Development Focus
YEAR 2 U15 - ACCELERATING PROGRESS AND CAPITALIZING ON GROWTH
Year two is dedicated to accelerating the progress made in U14 as players will be able to leverage their abilities now in their second year of this division. The significant exposure to elite competition and showcases, provides valuable opportunities for recognition by scouts from Junior, CHL and NCAA programs. Our experienced staff recognize the importance families place on this year and have catered this three-year program to provide the best opportunity for players to develop, be seen, and vault to further success after leaving our program.
See Resources Tab for more detailed breakdown.
Year 3 Development Focus
YEAR 3 U16 - TRANSITIONING TO JUNIOR
The third year is the culmination of our program, where we fine-tune skills and prepare players for advancement to the highest levels of competitive hockey. Our comprehensive approach ensures that each player not only excels on the ice but also possesses the knowledge and resources to navigate their future hockey career. With a team of dedicated coaches focusing on individual preparation, our athletes are well-equipped to transition to Junior, Major Junior, or NCAA hockey.
See Resources Tab for more detailed breakdown.
Development Breakdown
As you can see, at NSWC we offer a comprehensive development program that includes more on-ice time and personalized training, all at a lower financial cost compared to other options. Our players benefit from 6.5 to 7.5+ hours of total on-ice time per week, which is more than the 6 to 7 hours provided by both the Academy and Zone programs. This includes 3 hours of focussed individual skill practice time. Additionally, NSWC offers open ice accessibility, enhancing individual practice opportunities and development. A significant upside of our program is that athletes can continue their high school education at their current school, allowing them to maintain their friendships and comfort level. In addition to providing more ice time, tailored development, and educational continuity, our program costs significantly less than the Academy’s and Zone. This structure not only ensures a higher level of competitiveness and more exposure for advancing your career and is a more costeffective investment in your development
